For nearly three decades, energy efficiency potential studies have been used by utilities, energy efficiency program administrators, regulators, and various interested stakeholders to inform integrated resource planning and energy efficiency program planning. Potential studies are nearly always expensive and time-consuming undertakings. It is therefore important to “get it right” the first time, ideally before the analytical work begins.

This webinar provides an overview of key themes and the pitfalls identified in the report “Ten Pitfalls of Potential Studies.” Based on an examination of more than 25 potential studies, the report highlights several key considerations of potential study approaches and methodologies. The paper also provides budgeting and planning guidance to help ensure that a new potential study will avoid mishandling the identified issues and will meet the study’s stated objectives.
