Decarbonize the Grid
Commitments by governments around the world to a healthier planet require reducing carbon emissions. Reducing reliance on fossil fuels used in electricity generation is a significant step in achieving those commitments. This priority is imperative for a clean energy future and, therefore, is one of RAP’s primary objectives. Decarbonization will require monumental changes to mindset, policy and investment, and the payoff will be a more rapid integration of renewable energy sources.
Why This Matters
The production of electricity is a necessity. Doing so without use of fossil fuels is essential.
As long as people rely on energy to move around, keep cool or warm and power their lives, an environmentally safe future must be built on alternatives to carbon-emitting fuels. The world is responding with ambition and aspiration, with more and more nations going so far as to set zero-emissions goals. The stakes are clear for the well-being of people and the planet; the issue is how to get it done. The solutions exist – and in fact, they grow more advanced each year. Given the scope of the challenge, however, decarbonization will require more urgency, action and will. RAP is proudly invested in energizing this change.
What needs to happen
Powering the grid with clean energy means each step of the process will need support. Development of renewables must happen quickly, while also accounting for inherent complexities. Transmission is needed to get electricity from where it’s generated to the population centers where it’s used. And customers need traditional and innovative options to make their energy use more flexible. Regulators understand that all this can’t happen without good policy — and RAP can help, sharing our technical expertise and knowledge of best practices from around the world.
How Rap is Energizing Change
RAP is determined to help create decarbonized power grids that are resilient, reliable and affordable.
Our name is built on providing assistance, and it comes in many forms — such as an interactive blueprint of regulatory solutions, an assessment tool that compares investment scenarios, and a way to see how retail pricing can encourage efficiency in flexible demand.
Innovation and strategic policy, together, are essential to making decarbonization a reality. RAP provides policymakers, regulators and other stakeholders with policy guidance and robust research about the way forward. We are passionate about the possibility of such a large-scale change but practical about how daunting it is, too. Many of our policy advisors have held the exact positions of the people we advise, and we know the pressure to deliver on lofty energy goals. Our credibility is rooted in that experience; in our independence; in our presence in every region that we cover; and in the data and real-world cases that drive our counsel.
